SUMMARY:Lucy MacNeil
DESCRIPTION:The only girl in a family of five boys\, Lucy MacNeil can be described as the heart of The Barra MacNeils. Her crystalline vocals are immediately identifiable with the group’s quintessential sound.\nFor Lucy\, music has always had a heartbeat and she recalls it as the centre of her childhood\nhome where family\, neighbours and visiting musicians were often known to gather — the perfect rhythm of everyone’s feet tapping with the music would lull her to sleep on many nights. \nLucy’s own musical journey officially began when she was 9 years old\, but even before that she was step dancing alongside her mother\, a well-known local dancer and teacher. Her career with The Barra MacNeils has seen her opening tours for international stars such as Celine Dion\, Kenny Rogers and fellow Canadian Rita MacNeil. Yet\, with all the many rich and rewarding experiences Lucy’s fondest memory of performing took place in grade 10 at Memorial High School. A contestant in the winter carnival pageant\, she put together a performance for the talent portion that drew on all her talents – singing “The legend of the St. Anne’s Reel” playing the fiddle between verses and then ending with a step dance routine. The remarkable effort would lead to her very first standing ovation. \nA devoted mother of two talented young girls\, Lucy finds time to enjoy life’s simple pleasures\, from sharing recipes with her mom\, and getting car care advice from her dad\, chatting with old friends or dancing to the infectious latin rhythms in her ZUMBA class. Lucy MacNeil looks forward to discovering where music and her extraordinary life will lead her next. \nAges: 19+ \n  \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Villages
DESCRIPTION:Villages is an indie folk group heavily inspired by the spirit of the Maritimes. However\, creating music inspired by their Cape Breton roots seemed like a long shot when the members first started performing together. Back in the late aughts\, Matt Ellis\, Travis Ellis\, Jon Pearo and Archie Rankin formed the indie rock group Mardeen and fled Cape Breton Island for Halifax. Aiming to participate in a music community with a penchant for melodic indie rock\, the group strove to carry on the torch of their heroes in Sloan\, The Super Friendz and Thrush Hermit.\nAfter releasing several acclaimed albums and EP’s\, there was a turning point in that endeavour. “One late night\, a few years back\, a singalong of Rankin Family tunes broke out” says vocalist Matt Ellis. “I remember saying to the rest of the band that we need to write something that evokes the sound of home.” Soon after that night\, Ellis wrote just that song. It was called “Hymn After Hymn” and it captured the Maritimes musically and lyrically in a new and authentic way. This song was followed by a burst of creative output and the group quickly jumped into the studio to record these songs with east coast stalwart and producer Joel Plaskett. “Joel has such a strong knowledge of folk music from the UK and Ireland\, he really brought our songs to life”. The problem was\, these new songs had nothing in common with the edgy indie rock that Mardeen is known for. These songs needed their own home. \nInspired by an essay that comic artist Kate Beaton wrote about her hometown in Cape Breton\, the project was named Villages. The group released their first single in October 2016 and have been writing\, recording\, and touring in the time since. \nIn March 2019\, Villages released their self-titled debut album. Recorded at their home studio in rural Nova Scotia with producer Thomas Stajcer (Joel Plaskett\, Erin Costello)\, and mixed by Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket\, Basia Bulat)\, Villages solidifies the group’s vision in capturing the spirit of the Maritimes in a fresh\, yet familiar way. Combining Celtic and British folk music influences with the atmospheric arrangements of groups like the War on Drugs and Fleet Foxes\, Villages’ debut record is just the first step of a journey into rediscovery and reinvention. \nAges: 19+ \n  \nOpen in Spotify \nOpen in Spotify \nOpen in Spotify

SUMMARY:Tim Baker (of Hey Rosetta!) with The Weather Station
DESCRIPTION:At the end of 2017\, twelve years after their inception\, the multi-award winning band\, Hey Rosetta! went on hiatus\, after selling 10\,000 tickets to five farewell shows. For the band’s principal songwriter and lead vocalist Tim Baker\, this was the start of a new chapter.\nOn his debut solo album Forever Overhead\, Baker warmly welcomes you to it. The first words we hear him sing\, on the first single “Dance\,” is akin to a toast: “here’s to the other side.” What follows are eleven songs that centre on kinship and show that Baker’s sharp songwriting\, the heart of Hey Rosetta!\, is as affecting as ever. \nWhen crafting the album\, Baker drew from 70s songwriters\, like Jackson Browne and Randy Newman\, whose music filled his childhood home and from his contemporaries (Feist\, Leif Vollebekk\, The Barr Brothers). Produced by Marcus Paquin (The National\, Local Natives)\, Forever Overhead blends piano ballads with ebullient folk-rock tracks featuring Liam O’Neill (Suuns)\, Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station)\, as well as Mishka Stein & Joe Grass (Patrick Watson). \nIn the album’s opening track “Dance\,” Baker moves alongside soft piano chords as buoyant\, 70s pop style instrumentation and a piercing guitar riff steadily build\, bolstering his words of longing. He sings of connectivity and the tender emotions that are coupled with glances across a gym’s confetti-lined linoleum floor\, the air thick with potential. Like Forever Overhead as a whole\, Baker brings beauty and hope into listeners’ lives. \nAges: 19+ \n  \nOpen in Spotify \nOpen in Spotify \nOpen in Spotify \n \n

SUMMARY:Port Cities
DESCRIPTION:In the brief period of time since Port Cities unleashed their incendiary debut—a wildly self-assured collection of sparkling\, rootsy pop that showcases the Nova Scotia trio’s devotion to songwriting—the band’s been hard at work bringing it to the masses. They’ve continued to explore and evolve their ambitious pop sound\, melding diverse musical backgrounds to create an alchemy that’s part art\, part songwriting science\, and all magic: the nimble dynamism of Breagh MacKinnon’s smoky\, jazz-indebted delivery\, Dylan Guthro’s simmering and soulful R&B swagger\, and Carleton Stone’s razor-sharp\, romantic rock ‘n’ roll. In 2018\, that memory-making mix of unforgettable melodies\, high-flying harmonies\, and electrifying heart on Port Cities is set to reach audiences worldwide.\nIt’s a chemistry that’s been perfected during the 100+ dates they’ve toured in the past year\, in hotel rooms and songwriter circles\, in vans rolling through foreign countries to rowdy pubs\, and on the fog-bound shores of Canada’s misty east coast. It’s helped lead the band to numerous accolades\, including a whopping five Nova Scotia Music Awards\, a SOCAN #1 Award (for “Back to the Bottom”)\, and stints at #1 on CBC and Spotify charts. Port Cities has amassed over 1.5 million streams internationally\, showcased at The Great Escape\, Focus Wales\, and the Reeperbahn Festival\, and will be releasing their debut in the U.K. and Germany this year. \nBeyond Port Cities’ deep devotion to their craft\, their success is largely built on a simple but timeless approach: a good song is a good song is a good song. Whether it’s awash with synthesizer (“Sound of Your Voice”)\, pumped up with an overdriven crunch (“Where Have You Been”)\, or stripped down to the bare essentials with just an acoustic guitar and three voices. No matter what music the melody might call for\, the best song always wins. \nAges: 19+ \n  \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Town Heroes
DESCRIPTION:They’ve toured the world\, released three critically acclaimed albums and won an array of industry awards. Anthemic choruses\, 3-part harmonies\, tender falsettos and big drums highlight their riff driven\, dirty-yet-nuanced barrage of sound. On stage they move like intense caricatures – soaked in sweat\, pushing every chord\, note and beat to the limit. A structured wall of sound emerges; familiar yet distinctive. Camaraderie shows in their musicianship\, their songwriting highlights what they are: friends playing music for the love of it\, in it for the long haul.\nMusically\, TTH are reminiscent of the 90’s Alt-Rock bands they grew up listening to. Lyrically\, at the root of every song is a passionate exploration of the things that make us all human. Whether good or bad\, they’re the things that make us who we are: heartache\, longing\, society in the modern age\, dreams and family. \nThrough comedic videos\, social media hi-jinks\, blogs\, unexpected wardrobe\, late night sandwich stands at music festivals\, amusing acceptance speeches and interviews\, the band has earned a reputation for making people laugh. \nThough vastly different\, the band has found a way to balance these two sides in a seamless\, cohesive manner. They see it as a crucial\, necessary part of what they do. In a world where so much negativity fills the news\, where the media endlessly focuses on the bad\, The Town Heroes want to bring something positive into it all – as small as it may be. They see it as necessary because it is – it’s who they are. That’s something they’ll never change. \nFor the past 6 years\, TTH have played as a duo – Mike Ryan (guitar\, vocals) and Bruce Gillis (drums) – captivating audiences with their remarkably full sound and energetic performances. With a desire to push the envelope even more\, in November 2016 the band expanded to become a 4-piece\, adding Aaron Green (guitars) and Tori Cameron (bass) to the band. The new lineup reflects and effectively captures the growth\, vision\, and musical progression of the band. \nAges: 19+ \nOpen in Spotify

SUMMARY:Adam Baldwin
DESCRIPTION:There is a darkness in all of us\, a force that tears us away from love and toward self-destruction\, hell-bent on devouring the light we each hold precariously onto. And there are moments in our lives when we embrace that shadow self deeply enough that it threatens to consume us completely. A couple years ago\, at his home beneath the MacDonald Bridge in Dartmouth\, Nova Scotia\, Adam Baldwin exiled himself from his friends and family to try to understand the substance abuse that had spun his life out of control. Writing until he couldn’t write anymore\, he eventually distilled the 20+ songs that poured out of him into No Rest for the Wicked\, a haunted reckoning of his relationship with his own wicked self. The result is no triumph\, though it often sounds like one – opener “Half a Mind” explodes from the firepower of it’s snare shots into the kind of ‘80s-tinged\, synth-heavy arena rock that begs for fist-pumping. Baldwin doesn’t bend reality to create a happy ending. Instead\, he tells his story so far honestly\, hunting down the beast in himself in order to hopefully figure out how to live with it.\nWhile he turns his song-writing lens further inward on No Rest for the Wicked\, he shoots for the rafters with bold\, brash guitars\, earth-shaking drums\, and synths that by turns build doomy atmospheres or provide the rocket-fuel that propels a chorus to its interstellar heights. Recorded in Halifax and New York City by Gus Van Go and Werner F.\, the album builds on the promise of Baldwin’s award-winning No Telling When (Precisely Nineteen Eight-Five) and reveals a new sharpness to the skills he’s honed over the better part of 15 years\, toughing it out on the road and in the studio\, both solo and as part of Matt Mays’ band. During the writing process\, he worked out song ideas over long drives through the streets of Dartmouth – “the gritty\, sad\, burnt out parts of the city\,” he says – and Lawrencetown Beach\, surrounded by the serenity of emptiness and the hum of the Atlantic Ocean. It was between these two places that the perspective of each song would manifest\, presenting itself as either ghastly and anxiety-riddled or a vessel bound unsteadily toward calmer seas. \nEach path is fraught and electrifying in equal measure. “Salvation” pulses with unsettling buzz-saw bass as a sinister voice hisses into our protagonist’s ear\, trying to charm him into temptation. There’s a crack of light in the acoustic strum and shuffling tambourine of “Dark Beside the Dawn” as Baldwin hopes out loud that he might be capable of sustaining some brightness in his life while acknowledging its dual nature. “Delirious for Serious” rises and rises as its subject unravels through metallic jangles and flourishes from a muscled-up six-string. And “Shattered” arrives sweat-soaked and dance-ready\, riding on a driving beat that belies a heartbreaking admission of guilt and recklessness. “Something wayward beckons toward a shallow grave\,” Baldwin sings. “Is that your face in the wreckage?” \nTrue to life\, No Rest for the Wicked’s finale doesn’t provide any resolution to the conflict at its heart. The title track finds our ‘hero’ deep in the darkness at the edge of Dartmouth\, coming to terms with the fact that floating wasted here\, among the ghosts and shadows of the city\, there is no peace to be found. As Baldwin\, battling against the night\, howls its coda\, the song fades out on a jarring wave of feedback\, leaving the future uncertain. But uncertainty holds the door open for hope\, and any war between darkness and light is only lost when the fighting stops. \nAges: 19+ \nOpen in Spotify \nOpen in Spotify

SUMMARY:Steve Poltz Shine On... Canada!
DESCRIPTION:Throughout over three decades in music\, Steve Poltz did it all and more—often shared by way of his rockin’ countrified folk slices of sardonic Americana (hatched in Halifax). Of course\, he co-wrote Jewel’s multiplatinum Hot 100-topping megahit “You Were Meant For Me\,” but he also went on a whale watch with her and a few federales that turned into a drug bust. The two still share the story at every festival they play together. He made his bones as the frontman for underground legends The Rugburns\, who burned rubber crisscrossing the continent on marathon tours and still pop up once in a while for the rare and quickly sold out reunion gig. \nIn 20 years since his full-length solo debut\, One Left Shoe\, he blessed the world’s ears with twelve solo records\, spanning the acclaimed 2010 Dreamhouse and most recently Folk Singer in 2015. NPR summed it up best\, “Critics and fans alike now regard Poltz as a talented and prolific songwriter.” By 2016\, he survived a stroke\, endured anything the music industry could throw at him\, and still performed like “280 days a year.” \nHowever\, he still never lived in Nashville\, which represents a turning point in the story and the genesis of his 2018 Red House Records debut\, Shine On… \n“My girlfriend Sharon sold the condo we were living in\, and I was ready to live in a van\, which seemed like a good idea for one night—then I decided I wanted a kitchen and a closet\,” he admits. “Sharon wanted to move to Nashville\, because she thought it would be good for me. It caused a huge fight. I’d been in San Diego since 1980\, and that’s where I cut my musical teeth. I thought I’d never leave.  In fact\, at the height of our fight\, I said\, ‘I’m not leaving San Diego. I am San Diego!’ This makes me laugh now. As soon as I got to Nashville\, I immediately knew I wanted to make a record in ‘Music City’.” \nSo\, the man who once protested “I am San Diego” made Shine On in his new home of Nashville with one of its elder statesman behind the board\, Will Kimbrough [Emmylou Harris\, Rodney Crowell]. Holing up in the studio at Kimbrough’s house\, nothing would be off limits. Together\, they unlocked the kind of creative chemistry you only hear about in band bios—but for real. \n“I respect Will so much\, and I’d always wanted to work with him\,” says Steve. “Like two mad scientists\, we just took our time and had fun. We didn’t overthink things. Everything felt organic. We ate soul food and drank lots of really good coffee. We tried out weird sounds\, and the songs always started with voice and guitar—no click track\, just how I’d play them. I road tested many of them\, and they were ripe for the picking when recording time came around.” \nEvoking themes of “hope\, love\, contemplation\, celebration of Wednesday\, pharmacists\, and the fact that windows are not inanimate objects and they sometimes have conversations with each other\,” the record represents Steve at his most inspired and insightful. The opener and title track “Shine On” pairs a delicate vocal with lithely plucked acoustic strings as he urges\, “Shine on\, shine on.” \n“The song was a gift\,” he recalls. “I woke up really early in Encinitas\, California at Sharon’s sister’s house. The sun was just coming up. I was all alone in perfect solitude. My guitar was there. The sky was gorgeous. I wrote it as a poem. Everyone always told me\, ‘Never start a record with a really slow song.’  So\, seeing that I have O.D.D. (Oppositional Defiance Disorder)\, I  started my record with one. I love the mood it sets. It’s almost like my mission statement\, trying to find some semblance of positivity and light in a sometimes ruthless world.” \nOn “Pharmacist\,” rustling guitar and harmonica propel a tale of “this dude having a crush on his pharmacist.” It also serves as an extension of his friendship with neighbor Scot Sax—with whom he shares the podcast “One Hit Neighbors” (since they’ve both had one hit song). Meanwhile\, he joined forces with Molly Tuttle on “4th of July\,” which\, of course\, came to life on the 3rd of July. “Ballin On Wednesday” drew its title and chorus from a diner checkout girl (with a super cool gold tooth) who Steve paid with a $100 bill and she replied\, “Oooh\, ballin’ on a Wednsday.” The finale “All Things Shine” skips along on sparse instrumentation as Steve sends a message. \n“‘All Things Shine’ came about after one of the many mass shootings on this planet\,” he sighs. “I was feeling overwhelmed. So\, I wanted to put my feelings into words and melody. I was thinking that even if we’re feeling hopeless that there is still beauty. All things shine in their own way.” \nWho could contend that? \nIn the end\, for everything you can call him “searcher\, smartass\, movie freak\, lover of technology\, news junkie\, baseball fan to nth degree\, lapsed catholic who still believes in god even though all his friends are atheists and think he’s an idiot\, and maker of fun\,” you might just call Steve that little light in the dark we all need in this day and age. \nOr Nashville’s Canadian Jiminy Cricket… \n“I hope Shine On makes listeners smile and feel welcome\, and they want to share it with their friends\,” he leaves off. “Music means energy to me. All things. It connects us\, makes us move\, helps us relax\, and inspires us to change things up.” \n

SUMMARY:Joel Plaskett 2
DESCRIPTION:Canada has produced some of the world’s most enduring songwriters and Joel Plaskett is being hailed as one of the best.\nSince spending his teenaged years recording and touring with Halifax indie upstarts Thrush Hermit\, Plaskett has been writing his own story. After releasing two critically acclaimed albums – In Need of Medical Attention (1999) and Down at the Khyber (2001) – independently\, Joel signed to Maple Music Recordings for the release of 2003’s Truthfully Truthfully\, a rock tour de force with his band\, The Emergency. That record scored with critics and fans alike and truly put Plaskett on the national radar once and for all. Truthfully Truthfully was nominated for a Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year and won an East Coast Music Award for Rock Recording of the Year.\nDuring a summer break from touring in 2004\, Joel responded to a longtime fan’s offer of recording time at a home studio in Mesa\, Arizona. The results of that journey are on Plaskett’s MapleMusic effort\, a solo album called La De Da. The album is “solo” in the sense that Joel plays all the instruments but it’s by no means a simple acoustic project. It also isn’t a permanent move away from his work with The Emergency. Rather\, it’s the mark of an artist at home with his instincts and his creative muse and one that’s willing to follow fearlessly where those imperatives lead. La De Da attracted attention at regional and national media and the hit single “Happen Now” topped the Canadian campus music chart for months running. \nJoel has toured extensively both solo and with The Emergency\, to sold-out clubs\, theatres and headlining festivals throughout Canada\, the United States and Australia\, on the heels of great Canadian success with his Make A Little Noise DVD & EP (2006) and Ashtray Rock (2007). Make A Little Noise spawned an infectiously catchy hit single\, “Nowhere With You\,” that landed Plaskett on the Top 10 at Hott Adult Contemporary (AC) radio. He also garnered three 2007 East Coast Music Awards wins for “Nowhere With You\,” DVD for Make A Little Noise\, and Songwriter of the Year. Ashtray Rock was nominated for the high profile Polaris Music Prize award\, and earned Plaskett and his band all six of the 2008 “of the year” ECMAs for which he\, and they\, were nominated: Recording\, Group Recording\, Single (for “Fashionable People\,” another hit song)\, Video (also for “Fashionable People”)\, Rock Recording\, and Songwriter. Topping that off was Joel’s Juno Award nomination for Songwriter of the Year and his placement as First Place Winner in the 2008 Great American Song Contest and the Billboard World Song Contest for his single “Fashionable People” (in the Pop category). \nJoel’s triple layered album\, Three (released March 2009) features a stellar line up of guest musicians including his father Bill Plaskett\, Rose Cousins\, Ana Eggie and his band\, The Emergency (Chris Pennell and Dave Marsh). Three received overwhelming response from media and radio programmers across the country and was nominated for the prestigious 2009 Polaris Music Award\, which recognizes the best Canadian recordings in the last year. Without a doubt\, another personal career highlight for Joel and his band was sharing the stage opening for the legendary Paul McCartney (in Halifax\, Nova Scotia) performing to an audience of over 50\,000 people.?? \nAs a special treat to his fans\, in 2011\, Plaskett took on yet another project: a collection of demos\, outtakes\, rarities and B-sides from over a decade of music-making\, deliciously titled EMERGENCYs\, false alarms\, shipwrecks\, castaways\, fragile creatures\, special features\, demons and demonstrations. Boasting twenty tracks culled from dozens of unreleased or rare recordings\, EMERGENCYs is a fascinating slice of Plaskett’s history\, from his earliest days with the Emergency (three songs from 2001’s Down at the Khyber are featured in demo form) to his latest trips into the studio post Three. \nThe year 2012 started in high gear for Plaskett\, and anybody who’s been following along already knows the reason why. Out of the doldrums of another long Canadian winter\, Joel and The Emergency worked around the clock\, sending weekly volleys to fight off the seasonal blues: a brand new song – recorded\, mixed\, mastered\, and released – every single week for ten weeks\, accompanied by snippets of video documenting the process in-studio. It was an epic undertaking\, which came together in the physical release of Scrappy Happiness on CD and vinyl. The album is garnering outstanding reviews from the media\, is long listed for the Polaris Music Prize\, and Joel Plaskett Emergency kicked off their Scrappy Happiness Canadian tour with a live performance on CBC’s George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. \nThere are a handful of gorgeous tunes that call to mind the folk inflections of Three\, while hewing to the lean\, stripped-down production that mark this distinctive record as a whole (the breezy lilt of “Harbour Boys” and the standout “I’m Yours”). But Plaskett’s winking references to his beloved Cactus and Husker Du albums suggest that his riffing chops are as strong as ever. The Emergency provide the muscle for gritty guitar numbers like “Lightning Bolt” and “Time Flies” and they evidently haven’t lost an ounce of love for the kind of melodic rock that inspires tunes like “Somewhere Else” and “Tough Love\,” tracks that echo back to their earlier records\, Down at the Khyber and Truthfully\, Truthfully. \nScrappy Happiness is an eclectic display of Plaskett’s continued songwriting prowess and playful lyricism. While many of the songs tap bittersweet emotions hidden in the fuzzy details of the past\, it is the present where this record resides. Time’s flying\, so let’s fly with it. Music – the sheer jubilant redemptive promise of music: on the radio\, in the car\, in the kitchen or from the stage – occupies a prominent place in these songs and one can hear the joy the group took in their creation. But none of this would matter if it weren’t also\, in the end\, another compelling record from one of Canada’s leading musical voices.

DESCRIPTION:Canada has produced some of the world’s most enduring songwriters and Joel Plaskett is being hailed as one of the best. \nSince spending his teenaged years recording and touring with Halifax indie upstarts Thrush Hermit\, Plaskett has been writing his own story. Truthfully Truthfully was nominated for a Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year and won an East Coast Music Award for Rock Recording of the Year. \nDuring a summer break from touring in 2004\, Joel responded to a longtime fan’s offer of recording time at a home studio in Mesa\, Arizona.

\nIn February 2019\, Villages will release their self-titled debut album. \n  \nOpen in Spotify \nOpen in Spotify \n

SUMMARY:A Gunning & Cormier Christmas Show
DESCRIPTION:Two of Canada’s greatest roots singer-songwriters have finally done what everybody’s wanted — heck\, what they’ve wanted — for years. Dave Gunning and J.P. Cormier are releasing their first album together\, called Two. Great friends\, frequent collaborators\, co-writers and touring partners\, the pair has been talking about this album since pretty much the day they met. Now it’s here\, and it’s everything fans hoped and dreamed it would be.\nThe album is called Two because that’s what it is\, just the two of them. \n“We wanted to keep it simple and honest so we essentially made a 4-track recording\, just two guitars and two vocals. Limiting ourselves this way actually helped inspire the arrangements and the performances. It forced us to dig a little deeper.”\, says Gunning. \n“A lot of artists like us feel compelled to put these massive productions together\, and we said we’re not going to do that\,” adds Cormier. “We’re going to make this record be that large with only two instruments and two voices. And we did that.” \nTwo is made up of everything the duo excels at. There are new collaborations between the two writers (Brothers\, Home To Mary)\, new arrangements of antique folk numbers (Johnny Armstrong\, Katie o’ the Gowrie)\, and some tasty\, surprising covers (Never Picked Cotton\, Stompin’ Tom’s Songbird Valley). \nEvery song had to meet their very high\, combined standards. “We didn’t take it lightly\,” confirms Gunning. “We really put our heart into it.” \nGunning & Cormier go back 23 years when Dave had a fiddle player drop out of a show at the last minute. “He hired me for a gig when I was just back from Nashville\, nobody knew me here\,” says Cormier. \n“We were totally blown away by J.P.’s playing\,” recalls Gunning. “I remember him saying if you ever do a CD\, I want to play on it.” That happened\, and much more. They played together and wrote together whenever they could\, coming up with songs that graced both their projects\, over the years showered with awards and nominations on the East Coast and nationally. \n“Dave is such a part of my life\,” says Cormier. “Dave is like my family\, he’s like a blood relative to me\, and he’s always been that way. ” Gunning feels the same way. “Absolutely\, we just became fast friends\, and we’ve been working together ever since.” \nSince they’ve been two of the busiest solo musicians in the country these past two decades\, it’s been impossible to schedule time to make a full album and properly tour it. But that all changed three years ago when Cormier moved just down the road from Gunning in Nova Scotia’s Pictou County\, and the pair were able to meet often at Gunning’s home studio. \nFirst\, they picked some great songs. Then they figured out their guitar parts\, and when ready recorded the guitars ‘live-off-the-floor’ simultaneously. Then they recorded their vocals together. This recording technique gave them what they’d hoped for\, something unlike their solo albums: The power of Two. \n“It actually creates a sympathetic overtone like a third instrument sometimes\,” marvels Cormier. “You go\, wait a minute\, why does it sound like there’s another guitar? You sometimes can’t tell us apart\, or sometimes even our vocals you can’t tell apart\, which is really weird because our voices are nothing alike\, but when we sing together\, we have a sibling harmony\, we blend like brothers.” \nGunning & Cormier have been playing some select gigs over the past few months\, in anticipation of the album’s release. “It seems to be a different kind of response from the audience that I’m not too sure that either of us have experienced be-fore\,” says Gunning. “We love singing together\, we love playing guitar together\, it just works.” \nTwo is as real as it gets. Two songwriters\, interpreters\, guitar players\, and singers at their peak. It’s the power of the song\, the highest quality from the past to the now. It’s two friends\, brothers\, uncompromising performers\, making the album of their lives. There couldn’t be a better time to discover Gunning & Cormier\, and the power of Two.

SUMMARY:Petunia - The Minimalist Jugband
DESCRIPTION:Petunia is more than just an entertainer\, he’s a modern musical enigma.  Imagine that David Lynch and Nick Cave had a hillbilly baby\, that yodeled… or Tom Waits meets Elvis at Woody Guthrie’s hobo junction.  This is just one way of describing the man known simply as Petunia.  He’s an adventure seeker\, a poker player\, and a mysterious stranger.  He’s been referred to as “The Savior of Country Music”\, and a man who exists in a different era\, bringing the past forth as something new to be celebrated and not forgotten.  \nPetunia grew up in rural Quebec\, in exactly the sort of surroundings that a country musician would find idyllic\, with old dilapidated barns\, secret forts\, and acres of unspoiled land.  As an adult\, the wandering spirit took a firm hold on his life\, so he set out on the road\, playing every major street corner across Canada and throughout the NYC subway system\, before graduating to full fledged touring musician.  When he’s not on the road playing shows\, Petunia is also involved in the theatre world; building side projects\, writing scores\, acting\, or collaborating with theatre artists.  He currently resides in Vancouver BC\, and works with several sets of sidemen across Canada\, the US and Europe in addition to his own Vancouver based band\, The Vipers. A restless wanderer\, a musical historian\, and a quirky yet amazing talent\, Petunia is simply a Canadian treasure joining the greats from north of the 49th. \nHave a listen

SUMMARY:An Evening with Oh Susanna & Ben Kunder
DESCRIPTION:Suzie Ungerleider began performing as Oh Susanna in the mid-1990s\, crafting a persona that matched the timeless qualities of her music\, sounds that drew from the deep well of early 20th Century folk\, country and blues\, yet rooted in her finely-honed storytelling skills. This Canadian songstress has a voice that can pierce a heart of stone. Her superbly crafted songs often tell stories of troubled souls who rebel against their circumstances to attain a quiet dignity. These are tales of longing and love\, of small town joys and pains\, of our simple feelings and strong passions. These are tales that look into our beautifully flawed human hearts. \nFrom kicking down gravel strewn alleys to evenings tinged with salt air\, Oh Susanna’s new album A Girl In Teen City\, traverses to the most personal place yet: a conjured\, vivid past. \n“Here is my story of A Girl in Teen City.  Trying to find out who she is while trying to be something she isn’t.  Falling in love\, getting drunk\, having her heart broken\, hanging out with friends in bedrooms\, basements and parking lots\, sneaking into shows in burnt out warehouses\, watching the waves\, walking home over bridges and railroad tracks in all that endless rain.” — Oh Susanna/Suzie Ungerleider \nWatch & listen

SUMMARY:Pretty Archie
DESCRIPTION:Pretty Archie is a Country/Folk/Bluegrass band from Cape Breton\, Nova Scotia. Long time friends Brian Cathcart (Lead Vocals\, Guitar)\, Matt McNeil (Lead Guitar\, Mandolin)\, Colin Gillis (Harmonica\, Bass\, Vocals) and Redmond MacDougall (Banjo\, Percussion\, Vocals) make up this quartet. Always jamming together growing up\, they guys decided in May 2012 to form a band. The band chose the name Pretty Archie after a local (Cape Breton) character known for playing with 2 strings outside shopping malls in any weather and not always (or ever) in key. The guys thought the name Pretty Archie embodied the love of playing and performing music along with representing their hometown. \nPretty Archie’s newest release ‘Sing Alongs & Love Songs’ was made available on September 23rd 2016.  Bringing on Jamie Foulds to produce this project\, Pretty Archie continues to push the genre lines of Folk\, Bluegrass\, Country and Blues creating a uniquely Pretty Archie sound. The 10 song album is a collection of their best songwriting to date\, addressing themes of love\, loss\, life and the forces that drive all three. \nPretty Archie’s first full length album was recorded in January 2013 at the famed Grant Ave. Studios in Hamilton\, Ontario with well known producer/engineer Bob Doidge. The debut 11 song LP ‘Steel City’ was released on March 9th 2013 and is available on iTunes. ‘Steel City’ was nominated for Music Nova Scotia’s 2013 Country/Bluegrass Album of the Year. Pretty Archie recorded their second album ‘North End Sky’ at Soundpark Studios. The highly anticipated ‘North End Sky’ was released January 27th 2015 and was featured on CBC Radio 2’s “East Coast Music Hour” as an album to look for in 2015. ‘North End Sky’ was nominated for ECMA’s ‘Country Recording of the Year’. ‘North End Sky’ was also nominated for Music Nova Scotia’s Americana/Bluegrass Album of the Year (2015). \nPretty Archie has had the opportunity to be a showcasing artist at Nova Scotia Music Week\, East Coast Music Week and NXNE 2014 along with playing some of the best Canadian venues; The Horseshoe Tavern\, The Dakota Tavern (Toronto\, ONT)\, Festival of Lights Boreal (Sudbury\, ONT)\, Stan Rogers Folk Festival (Canso\, NS)\, The Ironwood Stage and Grill (Calgary\, ALB) Fairmont Banff Springs (Banff\, ALB) and many more across Canada. Pretty Archie is known for their entertaining\, high energy\, foot stomping shows. \nPretty Archie’s honest\, heartfelt writing connects listeners with a saltwater perspective on modern living. Their fun loving and at times heartbreaking music finds common ground in the blurred genres of Country\, Folk\, Bluegrass and Blues. Their unique sound has lead to the band developing a following that grows after each show they play.

SUMMARY:J.P. Cormier
DESCRIPTION:J.P. Cormier is a man with many musical talents. He is a skilled songwriter\, a gifted singer\, & an extraordinary musician who has accomplished success with more than one instrument. During his long career\, he has won many competitions\, including the Canadian Open Guitar Championship\, the Southern U.S. Fiddle Championship\, & the Southern U.S. Banjo Championship. He has also worked with a number of big-name artists and appeared on the ever-popular Grand Ol’ Opry over 24 times. His debut album\, Out of the Blue\, was released when he was only 16 years old. \nCormier was born in London\, Ontario\, Canada. When most kids were just starting kindergarten\, he was already showing a strong interest in music. Soon that interest proved to be an impressive natural talent. He taught himself to play the guitar. It would only be the first of many string instruments he would master in the coming years. \nNot long after Cormier’s ninth birthday\, he won his first guitar competition\, holding his own against musicians of all ages. He landed his first steady professional job when he was only 14. It was a weekly bluegrass television show called Up Home Tonight. Two years later came the release of a debut album filled with instrumental bluegrass music that showcased his guitar skills. After some time appearing at a number of festivals\, Cormier became the mandolin player for the famous bluegrass-gospel group the Sullivan Family. He spent a number of years afterward touring with the group\, and with other major artists. \nIn 1997\, Cormier\, all grown-up\, finally finished a sophomore offering\, Another Morning\, for his fans. The award-winning recording was followed by a third full-length album\, Heart & Soul. Along the way to making a name for himself\, Cormier has performed with countless artists\, the list reading something like a who’s who in music\, including Alan Jackson\, Marty Stuart\, Bill Monroe\, Waylon Jennings\, Travis Tritt\, Vince Gill\, Kitty Wells\, and many others. If his musical career had crashed to an end with the start of the new millennium\, Cormier would still have touched enough parts of the music world to ensure that his legacy lasted long after.

SUMMARY:Steve Poltz
DESCRIPTION:Born among the hearty seafaring folk of Canada’s Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, Poltz has lived most of his life in Southern California\, where the sun treated his rocky Canadian DNA like clothes in a dryer. Naturally a spectrum of cultural and emotional tensions arose and he eventually sought refuge in the art of songwriting\, where he tapped into an unforgettable and often horrifying depth of unhinged genius. \nAmong the music cognoscenti\, Steve Poltz is regarded as one of the most talented and prolific songwriters of our time. His songs have been among the longest running ever on the Billboard Top 100 and they regularly appear in movie soundtracks\, television shows\, and even the odd commercial. His touring schedule is ferocious\, ping ponging between continents with enough frequency to earn him manic followings in scores of different accents and languages. \nAny musician who has traveled as extensively as Poltz will have their share of colorful road stories\, but Poltz’ adventures read like a bucket list. Starting out auspiciously\, Poltz recalls meeting Elvis Presley at a small airport and beaming proudly as The King hugged his sister for an inordinately long time. Growing up in Palm Springs\, California\, he trick-or-treated at Liberace’s house and was Bob Hope’s favorite altar boy. In an alcohol-soaked haze\, he infamously accosted David Cassidy\, who had summoned him to Las Vegas to write a hit song for the aging Tiger Beat cover boy. \nHis rich and colorful legacy is the stuff of legend\, but it is his distinctive style of songwriting that has caused the world to offer up its stages\, clubs\, and alleys. Poltz’ sound is entirely unique- from his inhuman fingerstyle techniques to the inimitable melodies that roll from his guitar like cool waterfalls\, you know a Poltz song as soon as you hear it. To see Steve to perform live is one of the most entertaining shows a human could ever see. Frenzied\, aggressive\, hilarious\, and heartbreakingly sincere\, his live performances have become bona fide events\, with sub-cultures popping up all over the globe to entice him to come and tour. As relentless as he is in concert\, he is also the guy who famously co-wrote the timeless ballad “You Were Meant For Me” with platinum-selling songwriter Jewel. Of course\, because we’re talking about Steve Poltz\, it should surprise no one to learn that the song was written on a lazy Mexican beach\, where Poltz and Jewel were soon snapped up and sequestered by Mexican Federales and required to witness and eventually assist in a large marijuana bust on the beach. Don’t believe it? See for yourself in the pictures on his web site. \nMusic fans have adored him since he first fronted the hallowed punk-folk legends\, The Rugburns\, whose live shows earned the band a following that is best described somewhere between the terms “cult” and “crazed substance-abusing fanatics.” Once touring over 300 days a year\, the Rugburns occasionally reunite for wildly popular sold-out shows. \nPoltz’ solo body of work is an impressive collection of ballads\, rockers and uniquely melodic acoustic numbers that reflect his incomparable style of alternate tunings and savage finger picking techniques. Guitar geeks fall prostrate at his feet trying vainly to learn how to play his stunningly gorgeous and deceptively complex songs. To see him play guitar is a visual feast so frenetic that close proximity to his playing exposes one to risk of seizure. \nHis albums reflect the depth and expanse of his influences throughout the years (One Left Shoe\, Chinese Vacation\, Traveling and Unraveling). He has also released a children’s album (The Barn)\, a performance DVD (Tales From The Tavern) and a collection of other recordings that defy categorization\, such as Answering Machine – a 56-track collection of 45 second “songs” culled from his answering machine’s outgoing messages. Neil Young has ranked it as a favorite album. \nSteve Poltz’s latest recording project brought him back to Halifax\, where he collaborated with Joel Plaskett\, an award-winning Canadian songwriter\, performer\, producer and eminently kindred spirit. The two holed up in Joel’s Scotland Yard studio with a 2 inch\,16 track analog tape machine\, a 24 hour work ethic\, their comfy clothes\, and all the mojo they could conjure. The result was Dreamhouse\,” Steve’s most accomplished and focused album to date. Critically acclaimed across the globe\, it has been singled out by some critics as the 2010 Album of the Year. \nHis live shows have captivated audiences far and wide with a mix of singing\, storytelling\, shredding\, and the occasional spoken word rants which have been known to incite riots. He can take an audience from laughter to tears and back again in the space of the same song. Steve Poltz transcends the word “talented.” He is unforgettable in all the right ways.

SUMMARY:Old Man Luedecke
DESCRIPTION:Old Man Luedecke\, is one of Canada’s best loved and most intriguing roots singer-songwriters. “An original\, he is a musical singularity to be savoured and shared”\, says the Vancouver Folk Festival. His memorable melodies\, poetic sense and easy charisma appeal to anyone searching for new growth from old roots. \nOld Man Luedecke was born in Toronto but has made his home for years right here in the music rich maritime province of Nova Scotia. Here his music has been wholeheartedly adopted and is becoming representative for its traditional storytelling folk elements. It speaks to a new generation of people craving such meaning in their music. \nLuedecke is a young man with an old soul who doesn’t sugar coat his fears and this lets his songs breathe with a fresh breeze of bittersweet hopefulness. He channels a refreshing energy from folk giants like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger with maybe a hint of Loudon Wainwright III. But it’s Luedecke’s contemporary lyrics coupled with the irresistible rhythm of the old time banjo that connect and make him so loved with his audiences. Anchored in his music’s melodic confidence is an ability to tap into a common muddled and dark search for meaning. This keeps people singing his songs and praises after he’s traveled on. \nHis performances are exciting and totally entertaining. His uncliched banjo playing sparkles beautifully and dynamically. This coupled with his thumping foot creates a complete sound. People are drawn into singing along. His singing is his own. Clear and unadorned it is totally emotive and suits the sincerity of his tunes. In the breaks between songs come wild and charming stories of meeting heroes and easygoing but gripping musings on things ridiculous and sublime that may have a wink of contemporary vaudeville. Equally at home on festival main stages\, theatres and living rooms\, he can hold court in the occasional indie rock bar. Luedecke has been a featured performer at all the major folk festivals in Canada and Australia and an increasing number of American festivals\, like Strawberry in California. He has appeared with and shared the stage at concerts and soft seaters with such performers as Feist\, Tim O’Brien\, Joel Plaskett\, David Francey\, Buck 65\, The Be Good Tanyas and Jill Barber. He’s shared festival stages alongside Bela Fleck\, Tim O’Brien\, Jack Elliot\, Kris Kristofferson\, Ashley MacIsaac\, and countless others. \nOld Man Luedecke has received great recognition for his works\, including Juno Awards (The Canadian Grammy) for “Proof of Love” and “My Hands Are On Fire and Other Love Songs.”

SUMMARY:Villages
DESCRIPTION:“We didn’t want anything to do with it\,” says Matt Ellis\, who sings and plays guitar in Villages and grew up in Cape Breton. “Our siblings played the fiddle or the pipe—we wanted to play something loud. But it’s in you\, man. You can’t escape it.” \nThat’s how Ellis ended up fronting his own traditional band\, along with his brother Travis\, Jon Pearo and Archie Rankin\, a group of men you may also know as the excellent rock band Mardeen (or as Ellis puts it\, “all the same crew”). That band\, a longtime local favourite known for ear-hooking melodies and high-octane live shows—Mo Kenney’s 2014 hit “Telephones” is a Mardeen original\, from its 2008 debut—began writing acoustic-based\, trad-leaning songs a few years back. Less stomp-shout\, more swaying-sing-along. Last November\, Villages was the hot ticket at Nova Scotia Music Week and production has begun on a full-length album. (The single “Hymn After Hymn\,” produced by Joel Plaskett\, is up now at thebandvillages.bandcamp.com.) \n“In this style of songs\, the story is as important as the melody. We’re not trained at all\, it’s in the air\,” says Ellis. “It’s kinda like\, why not? There are two sides of me that are so fun to express. There’s no one thing that I’m proud of or not proud of. But there’s this side of us that we feel is important.” \n\nThe rollicking folk of Villages and driving power-pop of Mardeen are so distinct\, genre-wise\, that the quartet has no problem moving between them in terms of writing or performance\, pursuing both projects with equal focus and fervour. Mardeen’s fanbase and indie points do transfer somewhat\, making for a Celtic band that’s cool to like. “We have your approval and we have our parents’ approval\,” Ellis says. “It’s nice to be either getting people interested in this kind of music—that are our age—and to honour the people that inspired us.” This week’s IDOW show will offer a preview of the album currently in progress in Ellis’ basement\, and there’ll be no confusing it for a Mardeen show. “It’s a very obvious thing that when the melody comes to me\,” he says\, “if it’s full of salt water—oh\, that’s Villages.”

SUMMARY:Mo Kenney
DESCRIPTION:Mo Kenney never had that archetypal I-want-to-be-famous moment. But somehow she was always going to make albums\, play live and get noticed in her native Canada and way beyond. \nMaybe the clues were there in the way she saved up her lunch money to buy records\, begged her parents to book guitar lessons for her and made demos in the modest recording facility at a school she wasn’t even attending. Now\, Kenney’s brilliantly accomplished ‘In My Dreams\,’ one of Canada’s most acclaimed records of 2014\, is about to become one of the freshest and most inventive releases on the international stage this autumn. \nAnd stage is the word\, because the artist\, born in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, views staying on the road and playing for as many people as possible as her life’s work. The reward is in the recognition she’s enjoying from her discerning album audience. \n‘In My Dreams’ is already an award-winning follow-up to Kenney’s much-decorated\, self-titled debut of 2012. The new set swiftly secured an ECMA (East Coast Music Award) for Pop Recording of the Year\, to sit alongside the same trophy that was bestowed upon its predecessor\, which also took a Canadian Folk Music Award for New/Emerging Artist of the Year and no fewer than three Nova Scotia Music Awards. \nThe sophomore set is produced\, as was Mo’s previous album\, by Joel Plaskett\, the Canadian rock icon who can fairly be described as her great mentor and key creative collaborator. It was recorded in his bespoke studio\, New Scotland Yard\, in Dartmouth\, Nova Scotia\, and for his label\, New Scotland Records. \nIn an undeniable progression from the sometimes acoustic folk-pop of the first record\, the rockier framework of the new one reflects the fact that Mo is working more often with a band\, in the studio as on stage. It’s also a perfect showcase for her incisive lyricism. “That’s something that’s changed a lot from when I started writing\, when I guess there was a lot more covering up of the truth\,” she says. “I’m more direct now\, and I like it that way.” \nThe album’s flagship song ‘Telephones’ arrives with a suitably engaging and amusing video and provides an imaginative take on the traditional romantic predicament. It was first written and recorded by Canadian East Coast rock band Mardeen in 2008\, and suggested by Plaskett as potentially rich material for Kenney. “I don’t think very many people knew of it\,” she says. “But it was kind of a perfect fit.” \nMo is now reaping the rewards of the musical inquisitiveness that started at an early age. She’ll happily admit to the poptastic pre-teen period we all go through\, when she momentarily favoured Danish hitmakers Aqua. There was even a stage when she was at home to hard rock\, in the form of AC/DC and Ozzy Osbourne. \nBut then Kenney realised that instead of just listening to the guitar\, she should be playing it. Unlike many artists who were dragged kicking and screaming to their first instrument\, she begged her parents to arrange guitar lessons for her. “I’m not sure why I wanted to play guitar so badly\,” she says. “I don’t even remember asking my mum to put me in lessons\, I was that young.” \nWhen she started to experiment with her music\, fate took a hand. “There were a few bands recording at this school in downtown Halifax\,” she recalls. “I didn’t go there\, but I knew some people who did. They had a little makeshift studio where everybody could just go in and make demos\, and Joel came to talk to us one day about the music industry\, trying to give us advice on being a musician.” \n“So we played him one of our songs each and that was it\, he went away. I think that was about 2007\, I showed him my song\, he really liked it and then I didn’t hear from him. In 2010\, I got a call from his manager\, who’s now my manager\, inviting me to a songwriting camp.” \nWhen Plaskett went on to sign Kenney to his label\, she had the platform from which to create that debut album\, and to find out about the music business. “It was a huge learning curve\,” she admits. “I had an idea in my mind what it was going to be like\, and it was totally different. I was just really fascinated by how everything works.” \nAs well as having toured in Canada with Plaskett\, Ron Sexsmith and extensively in her own right\, Mo is already no stranger to international audiences. She has played Iceland Airwaves\, The Great Escape and Green Man Festival in the UK\, where early in 2014\, she toured for six weeks with her good friend\, Scottish artist\, Rachel Sermanni. Kenney is heading back to Britain\, Ireland\, and Germany in support of ‘In My Dreams.’ The stage is literally set for her. \n“Besides writing\, the aspect of being a musician that I like most is playing live\,” says Kenney. “I love touring\, so if I can build up audiences all over the place\, then I can stay on the road forever\, which is what I want.”
